When I hear the word “entrepreneur”, I can’t help but think of the show Shark Tank. You know, the show where all these different entrepreneurs pitch their businesses to a bunch of wealthy investors (the sharks), hoping for some moola so they can make it big. Some of the businesses are genius, and the sharks get into bidding wars over who will invest. Other businesses just aren’t the right fit for the sharks. But, one thing all of these businesses have in common, are extremely ambitious entrepreneurs, with really great ideas and big dreams.
I’ve never pitched an idea to a room full of millionaires, hoping for some of their money. But, I am a doer. I’m determined to a fault. I have a need to make things happen. And I’ve had several businesses of my own! I am an entrepreneur.
Here’s the thing about being an entrepreneur…it’s like dating. From start to finish, entrepreneurs play the dating game. And the entrepreneur’s dating game is just as confusing and complicated as the regular dating game. But, the end goal is the same, to find your true love. The yin to your yang. Your better half. The one. And, when you’ve found the one, it’s magical.
Now, let me tell you all about how I found “The One” that made my entrepreneur heart sing.
Part 1: First Love
Once upon a time, I was a young mom, with one kid, and one on the way. I had always wanted to be a mom. I really thought it was the only thing I was meant to do. When I was pregnant with that first kid, I had to drop out of college because I was so sick. It wasn’t even a hard decision. I never really loved the actual school part of college, and I had no career goals. I wanted to be a mom!
But there I was, pregnant with baby number two, trying to figure out who I was. As a mom, as a wife, as a person. I wasn’t unhappy. And I wasn’t really even searching for anything. But, then, I bumped into the world of blogging. I’m not going to lie, there was a spark. It was the new, cool thing. And it seemed like everyone was starting a blog. And then, they started making money doing it! I was definitely interested.
My relationship with blogging started out casual. We were just having fun. I blogged about my life. What we were doing as a family. And only other family members and close friends even knew I had a blog. I learned a lot about coding, and learned how to use Photoshop. I was starting to get more serious about this whole blogging thing.
While my relationship with blogging was getting more serious, my sister-in-law and I were trying to solve our meal planning problems. We were both in desperate need of a system that would make meal planning, grocery shopping and cooking less complicated. But we couldn’t find anything that made sense. So we created our own. And it was brilliant.
That’s when blogging and I took it to the next level. It wasn’t casual anymore. We were serious, and thinking about the future.
Pocket Full of Posies officially launched in the fall of 2009. Together, my SIL and I blogged about all sorts of things, while using that blog to sell our “Perfect Pocket Meal Planning System.” Our goal was to have a little extra spending money each month, and it worked!
That was it, I was all in with blogging and with growing this new business. I loved everything about the process, the work, the challenge, the satisfaction of earning money from something I had created. I’d never felt like this before!
But then, the excitement started to die down. The work wasn’t as fun anymore. We were bored. We weren’t being challenged anymore. The money flow was slowing down, and we weren’t creating anything new. Eventually, we decided to go our separate ways. Blogging and me. Even though it was hard, it was the right thing to do.
I’ll always have a place in my heart for that first business. I learned a lot about myself. What I needed in life, what I didn’t. What made me happy, what drove me crazy. You never forget your first love. And you don’t really realize how much you’ve grown until you find yourself back in the dating game.
