Wedding Details: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly | St. Louis Wedding Photographer

This one’s for you bride to be!  Let’s talk wedding details.  The good, the bad and the ugly.  When it comes to planning your wedding, the details can be overwhelming.  There are SO many things to think about.  Especially if you’re doing a lot (or all) of the planning yourself! Thank the heavens for Pinterest.  I was a pre-Pinterest bride, and there are SO many things I’d do differently!  But that’s a post for another day!

All it takes these days is a quick Pinterest search and you’ve got your pick of 874 (totally making that number up) “wedding planning checklists” telling you exactly what you should be doing when.  And we all know that’s just the beginning.  You can find inspiration for every single detail of your wedding on Pinterest.  It’s pretty amazing.  Or overwhelming.  Depending on the day!

With all that being said, this is not another checklist.  I want to talk detail, details.  Like the little things that you might not find on that checklist, or even know to search for on Pinterest.  The stuff that will take your wedding day from good to gorgeous without breaking the bank.  And most of all, the details that can have the biggest impact on your wedding pictures…good, bad, or even ugly.

Invitation Suite

First up, the invitation suite.  This is probably the detail I see forgotten the most!  Say what?  What couple forgets to send out invitations?!  Thankfully, I’ve never seen THAT happen!  But it is quite often forgotten as a detail of the day.  Think of the invitation as serving two purposes: first, to actually invite your guests to your wedding, and second, to set the stage for your entire day!  I know that sounds kind of dramatic, I mean, it’s essentially a piece of paper!  But, I’d imagine you took some time deciding on exactly what you wanted.  From the font choice, to the color of the envelopes.  And, in my opinion, if you took time thinking about it, it should be photographed!

Nice Hangers

Next up, nice hangers.  Also commonly forgotten.  And seemingly inconsequential.  However, this can be one of those details that you notice AFTER the fact.  Your day is over, your gallery has been delivered, and your happily looking through every single image.  When, bam! There’s an ugly plastic hanger holding up your gorgeous dress.  Ok, again, dramatic, and maybe you don’t really care! And that’s totally fine!  But, more often than not, you probably wish someone would have given you the idea before hand!

So what type of hangers am I talking about?  Here’s where you head over to Pinterest and search for wedding day hangers!  Or Amazon! Because, hello Amazon! Remembering nice hangers, is a relatively cheap solution to making your photos look like a million bucks.  Especially when it comes to hanging your wedding dress!  And if you’re feeling extra generous, get them for the bridesmaids dresses too!

Flower Remnants

Ok, let’s talk flower remnants.  I bet you’re not searching Pinterest for “ways to incorporate flower remnants into my wedding”!  This is something us photographers ask for, a lot.  You’ve likely spent a pretty penny on flowers for your wedding.  Your bouquet, bouquets for your bridesmaids, boutonnieres for all the guys, corsages for important women, centerpieces.  You get the idea.  The last thing you probably want to see, is your photographer breaking off pieces of your bouquets to use when photographing your other details! (Hopefully they wouldn’t actually do that!!) But I bet, in all your Pinterest searching, you’ve seen some very pretty images of wedding day details with leaves or greenery of some kind, and an extra flower here or there!  That’s where remnants come into play! A really good florist will probably ask you if you’d like any remnants, but if not, just ask! They’re going to get thrown away anyway, so it shouldn’t even be an issue!  And it will make your photographer oh so happy!

Perfume/Cologne

Do you wear perfume?  Does your guy have a favorite cologne?  When you smell those scents, does it immediately make you think of each other?  If that’s the case, add it to your wedding day details!  This is kind of a bonus detail idea.  Having a perfume bottle or cologne bottle makes for some really great pictures.  But, not having them doesn’t take away for the pictures.  Bonus detail! But something you may not have thought about!wedding details St. Louis Wedding Photographerwedding details St. Louis Wedding Photographer

Love Letters

Of all the details I didn’t have at my wedding, this is probably the one I regret the most.  And it never even occurred to me to do something as simple (And FREE) as writing a sweet love letter to the man I was about to marry.  And it for sure didn’t occur to my man! But oh how I wish I had those words!  I wish I had a letter to show my kids.  I have plenty of love letters from years of marriage, but not from our wedding day.  This is a detail that really personalizes your day.  If you’re getting married, take the time to write each other a letter to read on your wedding day.  You will not regret it!

It's about more than hiring someone to hold a camera and snap a few pics. Wedding photography is about capturing the joyful, bright, authentic moments of your big day in a way that beautifully tells the story of your love.
