The “Why” in Emily Broadbent Photography

The Heart and “Why” Behind My Business

I’ve spent a lot of time over the past week getting serious about the goals I have for my business.  I’ve been digging deep.  And I came to the conclusion that I need one big goal that I filter all of my other goals through.  And it’s more than just a goal.  It’s my “why”.  It’s the heart behind my business.

I knew I needed to keep it real, and keep it simple.  Complicated reasons are just complicated! They don’t make sense, tend to make everything else complicated, and rarely end in success.  And, ain’t nobody got time for that!

Guys, this was hard!  My brain tends to be complicated.  And it tends to turn everything into a spreadsheet, or 78 different lists.  Like, I am a KILLER list maker.  Lists are like my brain’s way of cleaning house, for the next 4,587 things to think about.  So, guess what?  I came up with A LOT of lists trying to come up with my real, simple, “why”. And, amidst all those lists, I realized that the “why” behind my business has always been the same, I just never put it in words, or organized my thoughts enough to explain it!  Needless to say, my brain feels a lot more organized now!

So, here it is.  In words.  My “why”:

To make money, and bring light and joy to others.

In the spirit of keeping it real, I want to make money folks!  Shocking, right?  While this probably isn’t the least bit surprising to anyone, it’s still a hard thing to put in writing, to the people that make my business a business! But this IS a business.  And I will most likely cease to be a business if I can’t make money!

Ok, but what’s really, truly the heart behind my business, is being able to bring light and joy to others.  And as soon as my brother reads this, he will 100% tell me that sounds cheesy.  But I don’t care.  Because it’s 100% how I feel.  For two reasons…

  1. Light has SO many meanings!  And ALL of them are good and positive and uplifting!
  2. In my opinion, Joy is the best kind of happiness. It’s real.  And it can overcome unhappiness.

In case you haven’t picked up on it yet, my “why” doesn’t really have anything to do with actually taking pictures, or photography.  It has everything to do with how people feel.  And I want people to feel light and joy through my photography.

The very first wedding I ever shot, I was a second shooter for another photographer.  We were on our feet for 10 solid hours, and by the end of the night, I was exhausted.  And I could barely get out of bed the next morning.  It was amazing. Say what?!! After that day, I knew I had to shoot weddings.  I knew I wanted to be the one freezing all that light and joy into pictures.  And I knew I wanted those pictures to radiate light and joy to anyone who saw them.

So, here I am, making my business weddings, and trying to bring light and joy in everything I do!  Bring it on 2018!
